About Vacation Bible School 2006 at St. Peter Catholic Church
 |
"Holy Land Express - Destination: Heaven" is the theme for St. Peter's original Catholic Vacation Bible School held July 24-28, 2006.
Following 8 AM Mass, the program officially starts at 8:45 AM in the St. Faustina room for prayer, then its over to the St. Peter's Middle School where the various age groups meet with their teachers to learn about the Mystery of the Day - one of the Luminous Mysteries of the rosary. Then everyone gathers together again, this time to learn music, which includes:
- Chanting the "Pater Noster" (Our Father in Latin)
- "It Is Good," a toe-tapping song that includes a few Hebrew words
- "Non Nobis Domine," a short hymn of praise to God
- "Lord I Lift Your Name On High," an upbeat praise song that has actions to go along with it and
- The "Holy Land Express - Destination: Heaven" theme song, a St. Peter's original that has the young people "doing the locomotion" and chugging likes trains.
All of these songs plus some extras are included on a CD each student received.

The Vacation Bible School singers are probably hungry and thirsty after all that music practice, so it's back upstairs to the gym for snacks that follow the theme of the day, including such delicacies as dove cookies and wedding-cupcakes, served with refreshing lemonade. With their energy restored, the VBS kids head outdoors for a game of kick-ball or sidewalk drawing.
Then it's time for crafts, where the young people have a chance to explore the day's Luminous Mystery hands-on with a project following the theme of the day. They also receive ten beads each day to add to the string of holding their name tag... by Day Five they'll have their own rosary!
After crafts there's a time for skit practice. The older children go off to learn their speaking parts while the younger children work on music and choreography in preparation for Friday night when their families, friends, in fact, everyone is invited to a potluck dinner and our Vacation Bible School presentation of the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary.
Each day concludes with a brief meditation on the day's mystery and a praying of one decade of the rosary.
